Gardaí have confirmed that the body recovered from the Grand Canal earlier today is that of 18-year-old Shane Coughlan.

Mr Coughlan, from Millpark in Clondalkin, was one of two 18-year-olds who went missing in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His body was discovered in the canal shortly before lunchtime and a post mortem examination confirmed he had died as a result of drowning.

Foul play is not suspected at this stage.

The search for the second missing man, David White from Carrickmore Avenue in Clondalkin, will resume at the Grand Canal tomorrow.

Both were last seen leaving a house in the Clondalkin area at 4.30am on Sunday morning.

Last night gardaí sealed off an area along the Grand Canal after they found footwear which is believed to belong to one of the missing teenagers.

Divers spent the day searching the waters before suspending the operation shortly before dark.

It is understood that tomorrow's search will extend beyond the section of water at the Fonthill Road.

Family and friends of both young men spent most of the day watching and comforting each other as the search was conducted.
