Scotland Yard is to deploy more armed police to the areas of London worst affected by gun crime following the fatal shootings of three teenage boys in less than two weeks.

Armed officers will also be stopping suspicious cars to provide high visibility reassurance in London's most at-risk areas.

A special task force is to investigate the three shootings and two other murders, all of which happened in south London in the last 10 days.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Ian Blair, said his force was 'absolutely determined' to stop the situation escalating any further.

The latest murder happened yesterday afternoon, when a 15-year-old boy - named locally as Billy Cox - was shot in his own home in the Clapham area.

Police today arrested a man over the murder of Peckham schoolboy Michael Dosunmu, who was shot in his bedroom last Tuesday.

16-year-old James Andre Smartt-Ford was murdered at an ice rink in Streatham on 3 February.
