Lucan - Kidnap & robbery case

Gardaí in Carlow investigating the kidnapping and raid on a security van have located the car used by the armed gang.

However, gardaí are still anxious to trace the movements of the green Toyota Corolla, registration 02 D 53074.

The car was located at around 3.30pm at Frederick Avenue, just off the Athy Road in Carlow. The gang had used the family car to transport the kidnap victims to locations in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, and Carlow town.

It is thought almost €2m was taken from a Securicor van on the outskirts of Carlow town in the early morning raid.

An employee of the security company and his wife were taken hostage by a gang of armed men at their home in Lucan last night.

The man was ordered to go to work as normal while his wife was taken away.

He was then ordered to drive a security van to Co Carlow. It has emerged that the kidnapped man received a large quantity of cash from the security van at the Maxol garage on the O'Brien Road in Carlow town.

It is thought the cash was then transferred to the gang at a factory nearby.

The kidnapped man's wife was released in Rathcoole in Co Dublin early this morning.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has been briefed by gardaí on today's raid.

This evening his spokesperson indicated the gardaí would be convening an early meeting of the security industry forum to review the protocols and agreements in place with the cash-in-transit industry.

Meanwhile, the Irish Bank Officials Association is advising staff to think carefully before agreeing to become key holders in light of the latest kidnapping.

Its General Secretary, Larry Broderick, says this is the second incident of a kidnapping in less than a week and bank staff are genuinely concerned for their safety.

He says it is clear that there is a growing trend whereby bank staff are viewed as a 'soft-target' by criminal gangs.
