The PSNI has found what it says is a viable explosive device following a search close to the border near Roslea in Co Fermanagh.

The search was carried out after a telephone warning from a dissident republican group.

British Army bomb experts examined the explosives which were found in a container on the Clogh Road, close to the border with Co Monaghan.

It is understood the operation to clear the device will continue tomorrow.

PSNI Chief Inspector Alwyn Barton said he was in no doubt that had the device exploded when people were in the area, it would have caused serious injury or death.

He said he believed it was an attempt to murder members of the community PSNI team in the area.

A section of the Clogh Road close will remain closed overnight.
