The Dáil began to debate a motion this afternoon which proposes the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Dean Lyons case.
The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, told the Dáil that the sole member of the commission would be George Birmingham, SC, a former Fine Gael TD.
Mr Lyons confessed to killing Sylvia Shiels and Mary Callinan in their home at Grangegorman in Dublin in 1997.
Mr Lyons, who died four years ago, was arrested shortly after the killings. The 24-year-old was held in custody for nine months.
These charges were subsequently withdrawn by gardaí, and an apology issued to Mr Lyons' family. No one else has yet been charged.
