A 53-year-old man has pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving causing the death of a 71-year-old man last year.
Frank Hayes, a retired garda from Glengara Park in Dún Laoghaire, also admitted drink driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
Gordon Geary was killed and his wife, Joy, was injured when their car was struck by a car driven by Hayes on the Enniskerry Road in south Co Dublin on 24 July, 2004.
Moments earlier, the car Hayes was driving had been involved in another incident where two young women were injured while trying to hail a taxi.
Today, Hayes also pleaded guilty to injuring Mr Geary's wife and the two women hurt in the other incident.
Hayes, who had worked with the Special Detective Unit, has been remanded on bail to be sentenced on 7 December.
