Sinn Féin has accused former Taoiseach John Bruton of abusing his position as EU Ambassador to the United States.

Yesterday, Mr Bruton confirmed on US television that he believed Gerry Adams was a member of the IRA leadership, and said Sinn Féin inclusion in Government in the Republic would be ‘very, very dangerous for Ireland’.

Today, Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin, Mary Lou McDonald asked whether Mr Bruton had any right as EU Ambassador to vent his anti-republican spleen or to comment in a partisan way on the domestic political situation in any EU member state.

She said she would be raising the matter in the European Parliament as soon as possible, and claimed that if Mr Bruton continued to put forward his personal views, his position as EU Ambassador to the US would become untenable.
