A 43-year-old Galway man who killed his mother in September 2001 has been found guilty but insane by a jury at the Central Criminal Court.
Sean Fahy from Ballindooley, Headford Road, battered 78-year-old Margaret Fahy to death in what was called a frenzied and violent attack.
The jury heard uncontested psychiatric evidence that Fahy suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and at the time of the killing he believed his mother was evil and 'the devil was stuck on her'.
The court heard that Fahy was released from St Brigid’s Psychiatric Hospital in Ballinasloe five weeks before his mother's death.
Investigating Detective Tony O Donnell said that the scene at the family home was horrific and it was the worst case he had witnessed in his 27 years in the force.
