A 43-year-old Co Monaghan man has been released from prison in Thailand after serving eight years for murder.

Colin Martin from Carrickmacross spent most of his sentence in the infamous prison called 'Bangkok Hilton', and is now expected to fly home soon.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it has been made aware of his release from prison.

In 1997 Mr Martin was arrested following the death of New Zealander Brett Holdsworth. In 2000 he was convicted of the murder and sentenced to ten years imprisonment.

Mr Martin has always maintained his innocence.
