The Garda Commissioner, Noel Conroy, has said criminal gangs and members of subversive organisations are targeting insurance companies to fund criminal activity.
Mr Conroy said they succeeded in accumulating significant wealth from spurious insurance claims that have been identified by the Criminal Assets Bureau, which has obtained judgements so far of over €1 million.
The commissioner was speaking at the launch of a new partnership between the Irish Insurance Federation and the gardaí to tackle fraud.
