Drugs courier under guard in hospital

A professional drugs courier is under guard at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin tonight after he tried to smuggle half a kilo of cocaine into the country.

The 40-year-old African man arrived on a flight from Amsterdam this afternoon and admitted he had swallowed 100 capsules of cocaine, estimated to be worth €60,000.

It is believed the drugs were destined for the Dublin immigrant community.

It is the second time in the past year that gardaí have come across an international drugs mule.

Last December, a 19-year-old Estonian man died after he was taken off a flight from Peru to Amsterdam which made an emergency stop at Shannon.

He had swallowed a kilo of cocaine but one of the capsules burst.
