A Nigerian single mother who had been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery has been cleared by an Islamic appeal court.

In a split verdict, a panel of five judges in the northern city of Katsina, found in favour of the 31-year-old mother of four in her second attempt to get the sentence lifted.

The case attracted international attention over fears that the stoning sentence would be carried out following the reintroduction of strict Sharia law in the region three years ago.
