Over 3,000 Irish credit cards have been revoked following a security warning from VISA. An unknown number of Mastercard credit cards may also have been ‘compromised’.
Customers from the relevant issuing banks here are in the process of being informed.
Last week both VISA and Mastercard in the US issued a worldwide alert following what has been described an internal breach of security at a US business.
No further details of the breach or of the company involved have been released.
From figures confirmed so far, AIB is understood to be re-issuing around 1,000 cards while Bank of Ireland have confirmed that at least 1,000 of its customers have also been affected.
Permanent TSB says that 100 of its customers have been issued with new cards.
Ulster Bank and NIB have yet to confirm if their customers have been affected.
It is believed the incident dates to transactions that occurred in the US one year to 18 months ago.
The Irish Bankers' Federation has estimated that credit card fraud in Ireland amounts to €5m a year.
