The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Mary Robinson, has called for an international tribunal to try those responsibile for atrocities in East Timor if Indonesia fails to bring them to justice.

Mrs Robinson was speaking at the end of a three-day visit to East Timor.

During her trip, she criticised the lenient sentences imposed by an Indonesian human rights court on people accused of crimes during the territory's 1999 election campaign.

The former Irish president said she had heard strong demands from the families of victims for an international tribunal to be set up.
