Murdered nun was sexually assaulted

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after a nun was found dead in the grounds of a convent.

Gardaí discovered the body of the 68-year-old in Ballybay Convent in Monaghan last night.

Sister Philomena Lyons, a native of Mallow in County Cork, was a member of the order of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

A post-mortem examination carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, has shown that she was strangled and sexually assaulted.
