Man killed in Dublin shooting

A major Garda investigation has been launched into the killing of a well-known Dublin criminal last night. Seamus "Shavo" Hogan died in his car after he was shot a number of times by two masked gunmen who were waiting for him in the grounds of the Transport Club in Crumlin. Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the killing but they suspect paramilitary involvement.

The scene of the shooting remained sealed off today as Garda forensic and technical experts examined the scene. The gunmen fired at least six shots at him in his car. He managed to push his wife who was with him out of the car, before trying to drive away, but died in the car as it rolled onto the grounds. Hogan was well known to Gardaí. He had previous convictions for burglary, bank robbery and shooting at gardaí.

In later years he turned to drug dealing and became one of the city's major heroin and cocaine suppliers and was due to be tried before the Special Criminal Court for possession of cannabis. He was a close associate of Martin Cahill, known as the General and he died the same way Cahill did. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and information on the getaway car, a black Mazda with false number plates: 92 KE 831. They have yet to establish a motive for the killing but they suspect there may have been paramilitary involvement.
