New Year's Eve has been marred by heavy storms in several parts of Europe. Spanish rescue workers found the bodies of two hikers who disappeared in the north-eastern Gerona region yesterday, while the body of a Chilean ski monitor was also found in the Pyrenees. The body of another hiker killed in a snow slide in the same mountain chain has also been recovered.

A 79-year-old woman died in Madrid when she was struck on the head by a piece of falling scaffolding. Strong winds were also blamed for the death of a British parachutist in the Catalonia region of eastern Spain.

Parts of Sweden could be without electricity overnight as electrical lines were brought down by the weight of snow and ice or falling trees. Swedish rail services have also been disrupted. In Croatia, flooding caused by torrential rains has eased, but some homes and roads were still under water in the southern region of Metkovic.
