The Minister for Tourism Sport and Recreation Jim McDaid has been awarded £90,000 in damages against the Examiner in the High Court this afternoon. The Minister had sued the newspaper for libel following the release of the Murphy Report into sex abuse in swimming. In June 1998 the Examiner in a lead story said Dr McDaid knew who the abusers were but would not tell the gardaí. However, the Murphy Report, commissioned by the Minister, did not identify the coaches. The day after, the Examiner published a front-page apology acknowledging the story was wrong. After deliberating for just under an hour the jury of eight men and four women awarded the Minister £90,000 in damages against the newspaper.
