The East Timorese independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, has returned to the capital, Dili, after seven years in exile. He is widely expected to become the territory's first President, when it obtains formal independence from Indonesia. He told a crowd of supporters gathered outside the Governor's residence that the territory would recover and rebuild after the violence following the independence referendum. Mr Gusmao's return also coincided with the arrival of hundreds of refugees on board a ship from West Timor. It was the first such ship to carry home refugees displaced by the recent violence.
The INTERFET peacekeeping force has announced that they have expanded their security force to cover the whole of the territory. The force confirmed that they had moved into an enclave in the Western half of the island and disarmed 40 militia members in the process.
