The Fruit of The Loom plant at Raphoe in Co Donegal has closed with the loss of 220 jobs. The redundancies are the last of the 770 announced by the company last December and the plant is the last of the satellite factories to close. Those at Dungloe, Malin and Milford have already shut down. From Monday next Fruit of the Loom’s remaining 1800 employees in Buncrana and Derry will begin a three-day week due to a drop in sales.

The mood at Raphoe today was one of sadness as workers left the factory where many had worked since it opened in 1989. Most of them said they had no other jobs to go to and they hoped that the task force set up by the Tanaiste would find a replacement industry for the factory.

Connaught Ulster M.E.P. Dana, Rosemary Scallon met with the workers before they left and later called on the government to introduce emergency measures for the area and retraining for all the workers. She said that it would be a sin to abandon the area and its people.
