The military authorities in India say that fighting in Kashmir with what it describes as 'Pakistan backed infiltrators' is intensifying. A spokesman said that over the last 24 hours, 23 Indian soldiers had been killed in some of the fiercest ground fighting since the conflict began seven weeks ago. But the Defence Minister said that an Indian offensive was succeeding and the infiltrators would be pushed back within a week.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has urged India to respond to its proposal to hold talks over the crisis in Kashmir, saying that its stand had won international backing. The Foreign Minister, Sartaj Aziz, said that his invitation to his Indian counterpart to visit Islamabad for talks on Kashmir still stood.
