Six people were injured, some seriously, after an apparent drive-by shooting incident this afternoon, in the Rochdale are of Manchester. "We understand up to three of the casualties are thought to be serious", said an ambulance spokeswoman, who added that the victims were taken to three local hospitals.

According to witnesses, shots were fired from a car opposite a supermarket. The manager at a Kwik Save store in Rochdale, said that witnesses told him that people had been shot at a bus stop opposite the store. Chris Gibson added: "From what we can gather there was a police car chasing a suspect car and as it went past the store the people at the bus stop were shot at for no reason. There were about five or six people at the bus stop." He added that the incident happened at about 2 p.m.

A police spokeswoman said a "major incident" had taken place and a number of people had been arrested.
