Vox Nostra with Vlad Smishkewych Sunday 19 April 2020
Although madrigals have a special spot at 9:30 every Sunday on Vox Nostra, this week's programme shines a musical spotlight on the madrigal form.
Vlad gives a history of madrigals from origins in the medieval period, to the English, Flemish and French Renaissance infatuation with the style, the Italian sumptuousness of Monteverdi and Strozzi, all the way through to the highly adventurous chromatic madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo and Muzio Effrem.
Throw in a few Spaniards--Juan de Salazar, Fernando Sor and Nicolas Ledesma--and it's the icing on the cake for a variety of musical styles and textures on a very madrigalesque Sunday morning.
