Vox Nostra with Vlad Smishkewych Sunday 24 September 2017
Coming Up on June 17th
Look up the name Joseph-Hector Fiocco and you might come across a violin piece used in Suzuki student music books (and interestingly, recorded by modern violin greats such as Itzhak Perlman).
But dig a bit deeper and you'll find out that this Baroque Belgian composer was responsible for a wealth of beautiful music, composed during a short life that lasted only 38 years. His death anniversary comes this week, and Vlad takes the opportunity to give a good listen to a recent, delightful recording of the composer's music.
Talented baritone and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Achten directs his ensemble Scherzi Musicali in the music of Fiocco, which might have been once heard in the beautiful setting of the church of Notre Dame du Sablon in Brussels, where Fiocco was the sub-master of music during the second quarter of the 18th century.
Vlad in concert with Carlos Nuñez, duet with hurdy-gurdy and gaita, Santiago Cathedral, 22 Nov 2017.
Vlad in concert, singing with Hesperion XXI, Santiago Cathedral, 22 Nov 2017.
Coming up on Vox Nostra on 20th May.
This week sees the lead-up to the Galway Early Music Festival as part of the live music proceedings around the country. Artists from Ireland and all over Europe will descend upon the bay to bring some of the most wonderful tunes and songs to the festival venues.
Medieval music by Alla Francesca, a programme featuring uilleann piper David Power with Camerata Kilkenny, and the voice and lute duo of soprano Aisling Kenny and Ziv Braha are just a few of the highlights of the festival, which we'll get to hear about on Sunday morning's programme.
