The Lyric Concert with Paul Herriott Friday 29 January 2021
Paul Herriott revisits one of the 2020 RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra concerts recorded at the National Concert Hall.
Paul Herriott introduces an all-American programme conducted by Gavin Maloney featuring Copland's Quiet City, his atmospheric concert suite for trumpet and orchestra; Samuel Barber’s gorgeous hymn to smalltown America, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with soprano Rachel Croash as soloist; and Shaker Loops by the Pulitzer Prize-winning John Adams. Based on childhood memories of an abandoned Shaker colony in New Hampshire. Adams says it 'summons up the vision of these otherwise pious and industrious souls caught up in the ecstatic frenzy of a dance that culminated in an epiphany of physical and spiritual transcendence’. Today, we discover how being part of a choir can help relieve stress, allowing us to leave behind the cares of the day. We meet members of the Garda Ladies’ Choir, for whom the weekly rehearsal is an oasis of calm in a busy week.

The laughter and hugs at Limerick Gospel Choir are as much a part of the weekly rehearsals as the energetic singing and dancing. The members have found a sense of home, through singing together!

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra present a concert of Christmas favourites with a host of great guests under the direction of Gavin Maloney. Their musical Christmas stocking will include some ballet dances from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker to choral favourites with RTÉ Cór na nÓg and Cór Linn. Soloists Rachel Croash and Brian Dunphy will have you Decking the Halls and Roasting Chestnuts, and Zoe Conway & John McIntyre will add a uniquely Irish flair to the proceedings.
Join Paul Herriott and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under the baton of David Brophy as they celebrate the 2021 in Viennese style. Soprano Celine Byrne adds some sparkle for the day that is in it as she sings arias by Lehar, Strauss and Sieczynski.
