Friday June 5th - Tan Dun conducts Beethoven live from Cologne

Join Paul Herriott for a very special live concert coming from WDR Broadcasting House in Cologne to celebrate Beethoven Pastoral Day. The concert opens with a socially distant arrangement of Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony- arranged for two violins, two violas and two cellos. In The Tears of Nature, Tan Dun commemorates natural disasters in Sichuan, Fukushima and Hurricane Sandy in New York. The concert closes with a world premiere: Tan Dun's Prayer and Blessing, a work referring to the corona pandemic.

The destruction of Nature by human beings and its consequences are the focus of this concert by members of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with International World Environment Day. As a contrast with Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony, they look back at times when people and Nature were still in harmony.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F, Op. 68 ('Pastoral') arranged for two violins, two violas and two cellos
Tan Dun: The Tears of Nature (chamber version for two pianos and three percussionists)
