Watch: Friday 17th February, 8pm

Paul Herriott presents tonight's concert live from the National Concert Hall, Dublin. Donncha Dennehy’s work, commissioned by RTÉ, was inspired by the cranes on Dublin’s skyline. It’s an exciting, adventurous, intelligent portrayal of this modern phenomenon, with at its heart the ‘oasis in the sky’ of the operator’s cabin where he can observe the world below. The composer calls it a work of ‘industrial strength’. Crane is complemented by Rachmaninov’s third piano concerto, which is increasingly regarded as one of the major concertos of our age, and the flamboyant, energetic, even raucous symphony by César Franck.
