Sound Out with Ian McGlynn

A programme that explores the latest music from Irish and international artists and composers, including a look at upcoming performances and a listen to new releases.

Friday January 22nd, 9pm (repeated Sunday 9pm)

On tonight's Sound Out, we'll explore Guillaume de Machaut's 'lion of nobility', an expansive work composed for the French defeat at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 recorded by the Orlando Consort. We'll also hear a new album called 'Relationships', which features many family connections between composers and performers including Elizabeth Maconchy, Giles Swayne, Malu Lin and Nicola LeFanu.

Friday January 29th, 9pm (repeated Sunday 9pm)

There aren't many concertos written for mallet, but tonight we'll hear Evelyn Glennie in new recordings of music by Alexis Alrich, Karl Jenkins and Ned Rorem. We'll also hear settings of early twentieth German orchestral songs, recorded with mezzo-soprano Christine Rice and tenor Stuart Skelton and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.
