Volkswagen's new mini SUV - the T-Cross - is due to have its premiere in the autumn. It's based on the Polo and aims to extend VW's reach into the SUV market at the lower end.
The T-Cross will be shown at the Paris motor show in September and will likely hit the market in time for January 2019 registrations. VW is'nt the first manufacture to chase the market niche opened up by the Citroen C3 Aircross - Nissan, and even Lexus - have similiar plans to produce small SUV's as customers move away from conventional cars in move into cars they consider are different looking and more fun to drive.
There are few details available at this stage but you can expect a directly linked to the Polo - itself a spacious and impressive small car - with the same starting engine line-up. This is a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine, with various outputs between 75 HP and 115 HP. There will also be diesel options and a plug-in hybrid version is also expected. There is also likely to be some influence from the SEAT Arona, which is SEAT's offering in the mini SUV market.
The images we've seen of the T-Cross suggest much more than a Polo with SUV trimmings. A more muscular profile is suggested, however, with the image showing a high stance and flared wheel arches. Given the popularity of the T-Roc it's one to keep in mind if you're thinking of buying a smaller SUV next year.
