Stretching its RX has allowed Lexus to move into the seven-seater SUV segment. The extra row of seats is also one of the most clever systems yet.
Lexus has'nt just added two seats for the latest version of its RX - it has re-designed the entire rear of the car to accommodate them without spoiling the look of the car. A new rear door panel, new glass areas and side curtain airbags have all been designed around the lengthened rear area to give the RX-L an identity of its own.
A lot of thought has gone into this re-design, as you'd expect from a car that starts at €82,450. The third row of seats can be folded electrically from the second row and the boot area, there's a separate air conditioning zone and Lexus says there is still a capacity of 176 litres of boot space when the seats are fully up - something other manufacturers have so far not been able to adapt to.
Leather upholstery is standard, as you'd expect at these prices.
The RX-L comes in Luxury and Premium grades. The grades are the mostly the same as the standard RX but the spare tyre now goes under the body on the RX-L, as distinct from under the boot floor. The panoramic roof is not available on RX-L - a glass sunroof is an alternative - and there is three-zone air conditioning for RX-L. A heated steering wheel is standard on the premium grade RX 450h.
There are 20" alloy wheels,Intelligent parking assist sensors, front and rear, a power assisted rear door, Lexus Safety Sense, a 3-spoke leather trimmed steering wheel, a three-zone electronic climate control system, leather upholstery, electrically multi-adjustable 8-way (driver and passenger) seats, 2-way lumbar support memory on the driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, Lexus Premium Navigation, a 12-speaker Pioneer audio system and a 12.3" multi-information display.
In addition, the RX 450hL Premium gets Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), a heated steering wheel, semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated rear seats in the second row, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround, head up digital driving Display, electrically multi-adjustable fronts seats,10-way seat adjustment for driver and passenger, adaptive High-beam headlights, a choice of wood style and sunshades for the rear door and windows.
There is also a luxury options pack on the luxury version, which costs an extra €2,825. This includes a glass sunroof with electric tilt/slide, a Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking.
Prices for the RX 450hL Luxury start at €82,450 and the RX450hL Premium starts at €92,550.
