It was bound to happen. Making the Fiesta more than it seems - at a time when crossovers are all the rage - makes sense and you can expect other manufacturers to follow suit.

It's not so much a case of compact crossover as a mini crossover with the latest iteration of the popular Ford Fiesta. Giving the car what it describes as "rugged exterior design features" is like the excercise carried out by Citroen with its Cactus models, to create an effect that masks an otherwise standard car. Roof rails and alloy wheels are among the features designed to add to the crossover effect but there is mistaking the Fiesta profile. Its pricing will start at €21,900.

The height and track have also been extended the suspension has been tuned to enhance "rough road ability", although the folk over at Land Rover are hardly likely to be very bothered by this kind of novel innovation - an off-road vehicle the Active Crossover is not. There will normal, Eco and Slippery Drive modes for some additional grip.

The engine for the Fiesta Active is a 1.0 litre petrol unit.

The engine is a 1.0 litre petrol Ecoboost that produces a modest 100 horsepower but it does have a six-speed gearbox. Standard equipment includes 17inch alloy wheels, rear LED lights and rear privacy glass.

A second higher-equipped Active 2 model has black roof rails, B&O Play premium audio system with 360° sound system, an 8incf touchscreen, cruise control, auto high beam, driver alert and traffic sign recognition, rain-sensing wipers. This version will start at €23,200.

There is also a new Fiesta ST hot hatch will cost from €28,120. It has a 1.5-litre EcoBoost that takes the car from 0-100 KPH in 6.5 seconds. There will be two versions - the ST 2 costs €28,120 and and ST 3 costs €30,270.

Standard spec includes 17ins alloys, LED daytime running lights, ST-design full body-styling kit, large rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust, selectable drive mode, ST suspension, Recaro seats, cruise control, SYNC 3 with 8ins touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, B&O Play premium audio system with 360° sound.

The ST 3 version will also have power/folding mirrors, partial leather Recaro seats, navigation and rear view camera/parking sensors.
