Aidan Fitzgerald's salon in Blackrock, Co Dublin, offers a bespoke cancer and medical hair loss treatment.
'My New Hair' was devised by top British hairstylist Trevor Sorbie, who started the service following his sister-in-law's cancer diagnosis. The programme has been created to give hair professionals definitive training and education in helping cancer patients adapt to their new appearance, and aid them in retaining their identity.
Hairdresser Aidan Fitzgerald, who has operated his successful salon in Blackrock for the past 30 years, is now part of the elite 'My New Hair' network of professionals who offer the service.
Having received intensive instruction in wig fitting and working with clients, as well as counselling training with the Macmillan nurses in the UK, Aidan and his team are experts in providing women with a personalised, bespoke and premium wig fitting service, to help them through their journey.
He said of the My New Hair service: "We try to make people feel better and give them an uplifting experience. That's what we offer here."
They stock a huge selection of wigs in the very private wig salon, housed in the lower ground floor of the premises, with a variety of styles and types to suit a range of budgets.
Aidan recommends that anyone wishing to avail of the My New Hair Service send in a photograph first so he can narrow down the choice of wigs that may suit the client before they come into the salon.
In the first consultation, he will help the client choose the best wig to resemble their natural hair and identity. After the wig fitting, Aidan will then expertly cut and tweak the shape for a bespoke finish.
The aim of My New Hair is to create a look that is your identity, while trying to uplift the client through this difficult journey. As Aidan said: "Embrace it, this is a journey you're going through, we'll help you on the journey."
There are five different ranges of comfortable and lightweight wigs available, ranging from monofibre to natural hair, and doctors generally recommend the monofibre wigs. These easy to care for, hold their style and require far less time in after care treatments.
Prices start at just €450 for a wig, which can also be part-funded by the HSE and personal health insurance.
Aidan and his team are passionate about preparing clients for the traumatic experience of hair loss, and making the whole experience more comfortable. He added: "We can keep you looking glamourous the whole way through your journey."
