Love them or loathe them, leather trousers are back in style. We show you how to rock them here.
Q. As a dedicated follower of fashion, I’m always eager to try the latest trends but I have to admit that I’m more than a little nervous about leather trouser. How can I wear them without looking like a spy or an eighties rock star?
A. The shops may be awash with summery pastel colours and floaty chiffons, but leave all that aside until it gets a few degrees colder. Now is the time to go hell for leather. It is the absolute must-have for jackets, dresses - and trousers - which are predicted to be autumn’s biggest trend. For decades the preserve of rock stars, bikers and every anti-establishment figure from James Dean to Michael Hutchence, leather is still sexy and dangerous after all these years.
Leather legs were seen in collections of Loewe, Valentino, Thankoon, Alexander McQueen and Hunky Dory but even if the endless limbs sauntering down the nearest catwalk may persuade you otherwise – this look is best approached with caution. What’s the problem?
The trouble with leather is that too many women you definitely don't want to be are wearing it. Anne Robinson struts around in leather because she's meant to be a dominatrix - Amy Childs is a talentless attention seeker. And Katie Price, glamour model turned entrepreneur, is not known for her sartorial taste. The trouble is, leather draws attention to itself. Always has. It suggests sex.
There's something primal, animal and a promise of 'I'm up for it' when a woman wears leather. Even a restrained, well-cut leather item gives a wink from the wearer.
The solution? It’s all in a little styling magic.
Counteract any kinky connotations by keeping your look very simple. Play with proportions and textures by teaming leather trousers with a chunky, oversized sweater or a fitted tuxedo jacket or try teaming them with a vintage lace blouse for a personal twist.
Remember to buy the right size - leather trousers look unflattering when worn too tight. Also, do avoid high-shine leather as these will make you much look larger; matt leather trousers are more flattering to ever body shape.
Finally, keep your make-up and hair natural and low key. Believe me; the trousers will do all the talking.
