It looks like the stars are getting in the festive mood too, as sequins were the strongest trend at last night's InStyle Awards.

While awards shows, film festivals and movie premieres have, for the most part, picked up pace after last year's many lockdowns, there are still some events that are only starting back up now. The annual InStyle Awards are one such event, and is always a glamorous affair.

The awards were held in the Getty Center in Los Angeles and honoured the biggest talents and icons in the worlds of fashion, pop culture and beauty. Among the honourees on the night were gymnast Simone Biles, who stunned the world with her self-compassion and maturity at this year's Olympics; acting icon Melissa McCarthy and renowned designer Michael Kors.

It's a night that often sees celebrity stylists pull out their most fun and flirty looks for the red carpet, as well as get a chance to shine themselves.

And speaking of shining, that seemed to be the fashion memo for the night, as sequins proved to be the most popular choice among the stars.

Leading the pack was actress Kate Hudson, who dazzled in a slinky gold sequin gown by Michael Kors, paired with an elegant camel overcoat lined with the same gold sequin material. Paired with her bouncy blonde waves, retro blue eyeshadow and her megawatt smile, it was our look of the night.

Not far behind her was Nicole Kidman, who looked sultry in a form-fitting purple sequin midi dress by Armani Privé, from the fashion house's 2009 collection. Featuring a daring bustier top and flirty flounced hem, it was cocktail dressing done perfectly.

Reese Witherspoon also went with sequins, but chose a rich, dark navy shade for her daring halter neck gown also by Michael Kors, which complemented her figure perfectly.

Their Big Little Lies co-star Zoe Kravitz brought her typically otherworldly fashion sense to the event, turning heads in a hooded scarlet gown that draped elegantly over her petite frame.

Kaia Gerber went for flapper elegance, wearing a shimmering blue and white gown by Alexander McQueen that featured dazzling sequin fringe on the hem. She showed off her supermodel credentials alongside her mother, Cindy Crawford, who looked every inch the original supermodel in a bold multicoloured sequin gown by Missoni.

Elle Fanning upped the ante in her outfit, wearing a daring gold and jewel-encrusted knotted breastplate by Balmain paired with a simple black maxi skirt. Meanwhile, Queer Eye's Tan France went bold in a retro-inspired pale pink suit, with cropped wide-leg trousers and a matching double-breasted jacket. He paired this with a bright orange floral shirt, edged with a white collar.
