Knowing how to dress in hot weather can be a minefield, but the Duchess of Cambridge shows us how going back to basics is always the best answer.

Keeping things sleek, sophisticated and elegant, Kate wore a white midi dress to tour Baby Basics in south Yorkshire, which provides essential items like nappies and infant clothes to mothers in need.

It’s the Flippy Wiggle dress from London-based brand Suzannah, retailing at €2,057.17. The stunning dress is inspired by a 1940s wiggle dress from the brand's own archive. Featuring a cinched in belted waist, delicate pin-tucks, a full skirt and feminine capped sleeves, the silk number is the perfect summer dress.

The contrasting black buttons added even more emphasis to the retro fitted silhouette, starting in a double breasted style and switching to single breasted. Her full and bouncy blow-out added a touch of glamour to the look, her honey-toned locks popping against the pristine white.

The Duchess accessorised the outfit with an old favourite pair of heels – the Tabitha Simmons Dela Lizard Pumps which she first wore back in 2011 – and something new: a face mask. It’s the first time we’ve seen Kate wear a face mask in public, and for the occasion, she chose the Adult Reusable Cotton Face Mask, costing €16.68 from children’s brand Amaia.

As face masks become more widely worn, they’re an extra opportunity to show off your fashion credentials. Kate did so by choosing a floral pattern, which stood out against her white outfit.

While the mask is new, the rest of the outfit is very much what we’ve come to expect from Kate – and we could all take a leaf out of her book. A midi dress is an ideal item to have in your wardrobe, as its versatility takes away the headache of summer dressing.

While Kate made her outfit more formal with the addition of heels, it can easily be dressed down for off-duty events with a pair of sneakers and a denim jacket.

As with many of Kate’s outfits, there’s likely to have been a deeper meaning behind her ensemble. On Tuesday – the same day the Duchess visited Baby Basics – the Kensington Royal Instagram account posted a picture of her grandmother working for the Red Cross.

You can’t help but see the similarities between Kate’s outfit and her grandmother’s, as they both come in a collared and cuffed style.

It just goes to show that a classic white dress – particularly one with a collar and capped sleeves – will never go out of style.
