Date night calls for something a little special, so it's no wonder Kate Middleton broke out her slinkiest, most elegant gown for the occasion.

While Prince William and Kate's date nights look a little different from the average – being the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium – they clearly feel the urge to dress up a little more than usual, too.

Kate certainly wowed in a stunning floor-length black lace gown by Alexander McQueen, featuring a pale oyster satin slip and intricate black lace detailing all over the dress. Adding to the romantic look was the unique silhouette, with a scoop back, puffed shoulders, flared skirt and sweetheart neckline enhancing Kate's figure.

The long-sleeved lace dress was perfect for a chilly night in London, and saw the Duchess go back to one of her favourite designers for the occasion. Making sure she hits every festive fashion note, the gown featured black velvet detailing at the waist and neckline.

Styling her hair in her typical curly and bouncy blow-dry, Kate finished her look with a simple black and gold clutch purse, black stilettos and a pair of dazzling gold hoop earrings with a dangling pearl detail by Erdem.

Her makeup was suitably fresh and romantic, with a swirl of blush across her cheeks and a little on her nose to give her that just-in-from-the-cold look.

The couple were attending the Royal Variety Show, their third one so far, which featured Robbie Williams, Lewis Capaldi and the cast of the new Mary Poppins musical. The event was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, who joked about the royal couple's "date night".
