Awards shows can be hit or miss, but if there's one thing true about the MTV Video Music Awards, it's that the event is a culture-defining event in more ways than one.

With this year's ceremony coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the moment Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift on stage - the bombshell that launched a thousand feuds, songs and jokes - there was no better time to reflect on all the moments the VMAs have given us.

This year saw a new award being introduced, the MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award, which went to industry veteran and eternal inspiration Marc Jacobs, so fashion was at the forefront in unprecedented ways.

Even better, this year's red carpet was one of the best yet, with stars going above and beyond to impress, breaking out feathers, sky-high heels and one incredibly fabulous red dress.

Unrivaled queen of the night was Lizzo, who reminded us just why she is single-handedly teaching us all to love ourselves a little more as dominated the red carpet. Looking like a mix of Jessica Rabbit, Aretha Franklin and all of the Supremes, she wowed in her red sequin hourglass gown by Moschino, paired with a towering beehive hairdo and a red feather boa.

If there's one thing we learned, it's that Lizzo loves a feather moment - who can forget her full-length feather cape at the Met Gala this year?

Bringing her technicolour fantasy to the red carpet, Taylor Swift wowed in a multicoloured Versace ensemble, pairing a pink romper with a highly structured blazer, all embellished with the finest of crystals and paired with thigh-high black boots.

For his VMA debut, Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness didn't so much own the red carpet as buy it, renovate it and make it better than ever. Strutting his stuff in a pair of black Prada heels, he sashayed through the crowds in an embroidered black cape and black playsuit by Shanghai-based designer by FANG.

On the opposite end of the spectrum was Camila Cabello in a angelic yet daring Balmain cut-out gown, the understated ivory silk gown teasing the audience ahead of her steamy performance with rumoured-boyfriend Shawn Mendes of their single 'Senorita'.

Shawn, meanwhile, looked fresh in a rich forest green suit by Dolce & Gabbana, paired with a daring sheer black undershirt.

Lingerie was the subtle theme of the night, with many stars slinking up the red carpet in something Madonna could have performed in 20 years ago. Halsey summed up her style as "a little classy, a little naked" and certainly delivered on that front, wearing a sheer burnt orange tulle gown by Dundas over black underwear, and adding a sweet pop of colour with her parting painted in rainbow colours.

Meanwhile, Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid coordinated their ensembles, both opting for muted shades of cream, gold and tan. Gigi looked statuesque in Tom Ford and Are You Am I, while Bella stunned in a midriff-baring number by Charlotte Knowles.

As the fashion megastar honoured on the night, Marc Jacobs pulled out the stops when it came to his outfit, which married his sense of elegance, timelessness and whimsy to perfection. Pairing his olive green suit by Huntsman with dazzling ruby Prada heels is reason enough to give him the Fashion Trailblazer Award, if you ask us.

Also honoured for her contribution to music was Missy Elliot, who received the coveted Video Vanguard Award and celebrated with a dynamic retrospective of her greatest hits. Leave it to Missy to flip it and reverse it in a fashion sense, rocking one of the tracksuits she made so famous, this time a black set emblazoned with her name in vivid gold.
