Earth Hour is a global environmental movement aimed at inspiring and empowering individuals, businesses, civil society organizations and governments to take tangible action for the planet.

It has grown from a symbolic "lights out" event in Sydney in 2007 to one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment spanning over 7,000 cities and 190 countries.

Now in its 15th year, the one-hour lights-out event continues to be the symbol of a broader commitment towards the health of the planet.

Earth Hour 2021 takes place today at 8.30pm and it aims to shine a spotlight on the urgent need to address nature loss and climate change.

Deidre Lane applied to be Ireland's Earth Hour ambassador four years ago as she was keen to share her deep green commitment to leaving a healthier planet behind.

"Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Fund and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, switching off their lights to show support for our planet.

"But Earth Hour goes far beyond the symbolic action of switching off - it has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.

"Earth Hour is open-source and we welcome everyone, anyone, to take part and help amplify our mission to unite people to protect our planet."

The Ecolution podcast also discussed the event earlier this week. Have a listen here!
