Last year Paul Weller joined the cast (Bob Geldof, Morrissey, Ian Brown) of the 'Under the Influence' compilation series with a trawl through his record collection from down through the years. Now he's gone one step further with his own covers album.
Weller has said that the songs on 'Studio 150's aren't necessarily personal favourites but ones that he could "reinterpret, play around with and make my own". And while some choices - Gil Scott Heron's 'The Bottle', the Oasis track 'One Way Road' - won't cause too much shock, reworkings of The Carpenters ('Close to You'), Sister Sledge ('Thinking of You') and Rose Royce ('Wishing on a Star') show more playfulness.
His take on 'Black is the Colour' isn't a patch on Greg Dulli's on the Twilight Singers' album 'She Loves You', but Weller's versions of Nolan Porter's 'If I Could Only Be Sure' and Tim Hardin's 'Don't Make Promises' deserve to make his setlist for every show.
Blurring the line between curiosity and cool, 'Studio 150' deserves a wider audience than just Weller diehards.
