Virgin – 2002 – 154 minutes
The Sampled Series turns three with a soundtrack that would grace even the most retentive record collector's birthday. This time we get the fuel behind such favourites as Stereo MC's 'Connected' (Jimmy Bo Horne's 'Let Me Be Your Lover'), Portishead's 'Sour Times' (Lalo Schifrin's 'Danube Incident'), The Avalanches' 'Frontier Psychiatrist' (Bert Kaempfert's 'My Way of Life') and De La Soul's 'Say No Go' (Detroit Emeralds' 'Baby Let Me Take You').
There are also 37 other cuts ranging from Chic and the O'Jays to Lulu and 80's pomp rockers Toto, all of which have been reworked and rewired for chart glory by the likes of Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim and Roger Sanchez. The only downside is that some of the shine is taken off Daft Punk's chrome domes when you realise that 'Digital Love' and 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' will never quite pay off their debt to George Duke's 'I Love You Alone' and Edwin Birdsong's 'Cola Bottle Baby'.
Still, you'll be so busy throwing DJ shapes in front of your bedroom mirror and tilting your headphones just so that you won't dwell on it for too long. Compilations don't sound much better than this.
