Scientific Laboratories – 2001 – 38 minutes
Having built up a small but dedicated fan base on the back of some noteworthy live shows, Dublin three piece The Dudley Corporation retired to Glasgow's independent Chemikal Underground studio earlier this year to record their debut LP.
The result is a mixed bag, both exciting and frustrating in equal measure. 'The Lonely World Of…' often sounds as if bassist Pip Moore, guitarist/vocalist Dudley Colley and drummer Joss Moorkens are trying too hard, like a musical resume targeting too many CEOs.
There is pulsating power pop, gentle, string-soaked balladry and indie rock, sometimes even in the same song. The best things here are the jaunty 'Score', the intimately touching 'Quick' and the raucous 'A Song Against The City'.
At the album's finish the feeling prevails that the Dudley Corporation are confused as to where their strengths lie. This shows plenty of ideas but not enough focus. Still, worth a listen.
