While they are a new act, Silver Owls members are well known to the music scene in Ireland, with John 'Haggis' Hegarty and Eddie Butt, guitars and bass both founding members of Irish indie stalwarts Emperor of Ice Cream.

John has also released music with Speckled Doves, Band of Clouds and Gammy Origami while Eddie is also a member of dark wave act Arctic Lights.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I am a graphic designer, bass player and a very average guitar player.

How would you describe your music?

Indie, dreampop, alternative, shoegaze, some of my friends think Silver Owls sound like Echo and the Bunnymen but I don’t get that myself.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Lots really, grew up listening to bands like The Cure, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub and too many others to mention. I don’t restrict myself to genres, I would listen to anything from Led Zeppelin to Taylor Swift, while I am not a music snob I am 99% indie kid.

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

The first really big gig/concert was The Cure in RDS, Dublin. Before that lots of Cork gigs that would let me in as I was underage. First record I bought was The Rise & Fall by Madness while on a trip to Liverpool. After that, Depeche Mode’s 7 inch single A Question of Time, the live B-Side track Black Celebration influenced me to play bass.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song right now has to be Neon Hip from our FIFA Records label mates First Class & Coach. It’s the best thing I’ve heard in years. Also Fade Away by Arctic Lights featuring Cat Dowling, but I’m biased there as I am also in Arctic Lights.

Favourite lyric of all time?

‘Just because you're paranoid, Don't mean they're not after you’ - Nirvana.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Nick Cave’s The Ship Song.
