Bristol-based songwriter Jamie Beale has released his debut single Borderline. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Jamie, vocalist and songwriter of rock band Novatines, wrote his new song during the winter lockdown in the middle of an increasingly isolated period of his life.

His relationship was coming to an end, he was alone in lockdown and his music and touring career with Novatines was looking uncertain, along with his idea of a future within music at all.

Speaking about that time, he states: "I was spending the majority of my time living in a hazy dreamworld, searching for something positive to hold onto.

"I felt that no matter what, I still had me and my own personal freedom of mind, and there was something comforting about that. Somewhere between my partially self-induced cabin fever madness and a sense of unshakable positivity in an unusual time, I wrote Borderline.

"I guess it's a song for people with nowhere to go, and how not knowing where you belong isn't always a bad thing."

Tell us three things about yourself?

I have a cat named Scooby (terrible name for a cat)

I practice meditation and mindfulness every day.

I can word for word quote every episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

How would you describe your music?

I think at its core, it’s psychedelic pop. I’m a sucker for a good hook, but I find modern pop production and lyrics super boring… hence the psychedelia creeping in. I wanted to know what a project where I am the producer and pretty much playing every instrument (shout out to my brother Callum Moloney on the drums) sounded like so that’s how the project came to be.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I’m a Beatles guy, it’s cliché but who gives a s***, right? I’m also big into my funk and soul music, I’m pretty much listening to Funkadelic and Parliament on repeat these days. I also happen to have a Pink Floyd and Tom Petty tattoo, so make of that what you will…

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

The first show I went to see was James Brown supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers, I went with my old man and a couple of old friends from school. I was obsessed with the Chilis and I have a childhood memory of my parents giving me my mobile phone, it was one of the old Nokia style ones, but it had a voice memo option. I used to record 30-second snippets of myself singing the chorus to By The Way over and over again, simple pleasures!

My first record was Nirvana's greatest hits, you know, the one with You Know You’re Right on it… I remember it being the first time I had money that was more than like 20 pence, so instead of loading up on sugary sweets, I loaded up on grunge and never looked back.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song of all time is God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, but I’m currently spinning Come Down by Anderson .Paak on repeat. I’m currently out on a tour of France and Switzerland, so that’s been my tour anthem for sure.

Favourite lyric of all time?

That’s a tough one, it changes all the time… but right now I love Adam Granduciel from The War On Drugs' lyrics… There is a line that always gets me in I Don’t Live Here Anymore. "Time surrounds me like an ocean, My memories like waves, Is life just dying in slow motion, Or getting stronger everyday?" It’s beautiful, sad, melancholic with a hint of existential dread… and I’m mad for it!

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles. This psychedelic masterpiece is hypnotic enough to distract you from the insanity of listening to one song over and over again forever.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find me on Spotify, ITunes, Instagram, Facebook at @jamiebealeofficial and if you are feeling really psychotic, I guess Twitter…
