French-Norwegian symphonic metallers Sirenia have just released their new album, Riddles, Ruins & Revelations. We ask singer Emmanuelle Zoldan the BIG questions...

Tell us three things about yourself?

I'm an art lover. Creating is a daily need for me to feel good. Writing, painting, drawing, composing are kind of a therapy for me. I couldn't live without it.

I'm a passionate person. I can't do things by halves. I always put all my heart and involvement in everything I do. When I'm working on a project, I can spend whole days sometimes without eating or sleeping to go through it. I'm not a reasonable person at all!

I'm a nature lover. I need to feel the calm of nature around me. I spend a lot of time walking in the forest. It's the best way for me to reconnect with myself, to find inspiration, to breathe.

How would you describe your music?

A very singular Dark Gothic Symphonic Metal with a variable geometry, always exploring new horizons and music possibilities without ever losing its essence. Sometimes melancholic, sometimes heavy and powerful, offering through 10 albums a great variety and versatility, and different atmospheres.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I personally find inspiration in different genres of music, from classical to metal, passing by pop and even traditional music. There are interesting things in everything. I'm a big fan of the melodic lines of bands like Queen or Pink Floyd. I love the more aggressive energy of Rage Against the Machine and I madly love the complexity of progressive metal bands like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and many others. In music, I need to be surprised all the time.

How have you been occupying yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

I never stopped creating in many ways: writing, painting, composing. I focused more than usual on what I needed to make 'go out' of me. Music and painting are the best therapy for me, especially in these troubled times.

What's your favourite song right now?

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would become completely mad listening to the same song the rest of my life, even if it's my favourite one! I love too much diversity in music to answer objectively to this question! I would prefer to chose an artist or a band, and in this case, I would never be bored with Queen's music, because of their great versatility!
