First Dates is back on RTÉ2 on Thursday, and we are promised "a conflagration of fiery first impressions, burning hearts and old flames" from the "suitably-distanced" sixth series.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, maître d' Mateo, master-mixologist Ethan and the rushed-off-their-feet Alice and Pete will be trying to put the romantic hopefuls at ease - easier said than done when the background diners include family bubbles of their friends and nearest and dearest.

In episode one:

"Tracy (26) from Dublin arrives in a red dress in search of a redhead as Rob (26) from Cork gingerly attempts to rock her world.

Tracy and Rob

"Bubbly Amy (27) from Dublin is prepared for just about anything, but will she be dazed and confused in the presence of reformed party-boy Sean (26) from Blanchardstown?

"Westeros meets the Wild Atlantic Way as Game of Thrones actor Tim (54) from Tralee auditions for a place in the heart of outgoing painter-decorator Rory (48) from Sligo."

We will also meet Shane (35) from Meath, who has not been on a date for 14 years, having been forced to rebuild his life after a severe head injury.

Shane is dining with single-parent Avril (35), who has not been on a date in 10 years.

"I would give up all I have achieved if I could be happy and in a relationship with someone," he tells her.

Viewers can find out how they all get on this Thursday on RTÉ2 at 9:30pm.

In the second episode of the new series next week, a very familiar face will be hoping for some help from Cupid - Dancing with the Stars and Big Brother contestant Hughie Maughan.

Hughie will be among the hopefuls in episode two

Hughie's date will be Paul (31), originally from Glasgow - and you can judge if there's a spark on the 18 February episode.
