God Creative has just released his new single with Chris Kabs, Around the World. We ask him the BIG questions!
Tell us three things about yourself?
Although I've been a lyricist most of my life, I recorded my first track in Darklands Audio Studio six years ago when I was 28-years-old. It's never too late to pursue your passion. I've always loved Jiu-Jitsu too, and finally joined an academy last month!
I've always been somewhat of a part-time collector of oddities and curiosities. I like to collect vintage watches. I recently got into designer toys over the last few years. These are mostly small micro runs of handmade toy sculptures, mostly cast in vinyl or resin then painted with details. It's an obsession that has no doubt stemmed from all the 90s toys I owned as a kid. It's a very expensive hobby, but I love the hunt for rare art.
I'm also part of two musical projects, Creative Crime and Soundwave Legacy. We've featured tunes from both groups into the Irish film Cardboard Gangsters. Also, Creative Crime has a tune in Broken Law that hits cinemas soon as restrictions lift! We've toured and opened sold-out Vicar Street gigs for our big brother Damo [Damien Dempsey] and went on tour with legends like Obie Trice, Nelly and Coolio!
How would you describe your music?
Honestly, my music is always changing as I mature, but I have noticed a prominent recurring message that comes through in my work. It sounds cheesy, but it's 'love'. Love is the highest form of understanding and my music is at its finest when I'm simply speaking from the heart. I describe my music as passionate.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Old stock gives me power. The Blues; people like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Soul singers; such as Etta James and Sam Cooke - now you're talkin'! And not to mention the greatest band in the world, Fleetwood Mac!
How have you been occupying yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
I'm eating a lot. I've turned into somewhat of a gourmet chef over this lockdown haha! I've also a two-year-old daughter, Nova; and a 10-month-old-son, Odin; so I am fully occupied being their Daddy! Other than that, I've used the lockdown time to line up some really cool music features - one of them isn't Damien Dempsey, I swear! - and develop a new podcast and show that'll be coming soon called The Traveller and Settler. It's with my good friend, actor John Connors.
What's your favourite song right now?
Nealo - Heart Food for Hard Times.
Favourite lyric of all time?
I sing this lyric once a week in my head; it's the opening song to a cartoon that they used to show on Nickelodeon: "One fine day with a woof and a purr, a baby was born and it caused a little stir. No blue buzzard, no three-eyed frog, just a canine feline little CatDog. CatDog, CatDog, alone in the world is a little cat dog."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
It would have to be Say Something by Justin Timberlake. That gave me great energy and I normally listen to it about three to four times in a row before I change songs in my headphones. In saying that, I'd hate to have to listen to one song for the rest of my life. That sounds some type of torture!
