Dublin-based dance/pop artist (and former Lego champion) Butler has teamed up with singer J Bols on his new song Colours of Love. We asked Butler the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself?

I was once the All-Ireland Lego building champion. Yes, I won the overall prize back in the 90s haha, my mam thought I was gonna be an engineer or something.

My first ever live performance was as a support act for US rapper Coolio. I wrote my rap verses one week before the concert. It was just an unbelievable feeling.

I love biscuits, in particular chocolate chip cookies from M&S or Fox's cookies.

How would you describe your music?

It's dance/pop with an international feel, radio ready is the phrase I like to use. Butler as a project combines dance elements with pop melody and international rhythm elements and beats like on new single Colours Of Love with J BOLS. This project really excites me and allows me to explore my love for different styles of music when writing material. I'm also a massive fan of 80s synth pop and hope to bake that flavour into upcoming tracks I have in mind.

Who are your musical inspirations?

That's a very tough question. In terms of performers it's got to be Elvis and Michael Jackson. Off The Wall by Michael Jackson is probably my favourite album ever. I remember listening to it as a kid and hearing something new in the songs every time I played it, it just blew me away. It still stands up to this day and I would put it on while getting ready for a gig or performance. In terms of talent, people like Prince and The Beatles. Random I know haha. Right now I listen to a lot of House Music and actually never miss Dave Treacy when he's on RTÉ radio.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

Looking after my baby girl who's 17 months now. She's started walking at the start of lockdown so it was all hands on deck keeping her busy. As a full time musician I obviously found it tough to adjust to not having work and gigs. I had just finished a tour with my band The Swing Cats in February so initially I embraced the break but now I am more than ready to go back to performing.

What's your favourite song right now?

HONEY by Eats Everything!! Possibly my song of the summer haha.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Fairy tales can come true, It can happen to you if you're young at heart" - Young At Heart by Frank Sinatra. I'm a sucker for those sorts of songs. I used to listen to all these old classics when I start performing with The Swing Cats but only now that i'm a fully grown man in his 30s do I get how good these songs actually are.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

Happy by Pharrell Williams - absolutely stunning song, wish I had written it haha.
