It is reported that Coronation Street star Faye Brookes and singer Gareth Gates have called off their engagement.

The Sun Online claims the stars, who had been together on and off for seven years, have decided they would prefer to be friends.

"Gareth and Faye have been through a lot together but they just can't make it work," a source is quoted as saying.

"She's in a different place right now after leaving Corrie and is working hard to land some new roles.

Brookes, who played Kate Connor in Coronation Street, announced she was leaving the ITV soap earlier this year

"She was really excited about the wedding and had even picked a venue, but deep down she knew it wasn't right.

"They are both really sad about it but have vowed to remain friends."

A quote recently posted by Brookes on social media read: "Someone said 'Don't be afraid to start over again. This time, you are not starting from scratch, you are starting from experience'."

Brookes and Gates' engagement was first reported in January of this year - four months after they had split up.

Brookes, who played Kate Connor in Coronation Street, and Pop Idol runner-up Gates had split in September 2018 and vowed to remain friends, only to get back together before Christmas.
