Elton John performed his ballad Your Song in Hamburg in memory of his mother on Tuesday night and recalled how he wrote the song at her apartment back in 1970.
"I was thinking how I can pay tribute to her tonight and what song I should choose?" he told the audience in the North German city.
"Well, this next song I wrote at her house or her apartment. I can remember every single minute of writing this song with Bernie (Taupin, his lyricist). So this is a song I want to dedicate to her.
"And it has taken me from nowhere to somewhere. So thank you, mum."
The singer revealed the passing of his mother, Sheila Farebrother, in a social media post on Monday. "So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe, Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton." he wrote.
Sheila's death occurred a year after she and Elton had patched up their nine-year estrangement. The difficulties reportedly arose over her refusal to cease contact with two of her son’s friends after he had fallen out with them, according to the Daily Express.
