The showrunner for Marvel show Luke Cage is making big claims about the Netflix drama – liking it to legendary TV series The Wire.

Mike Colter stars as the superhero – introduced on Jessica Jones - with unbreakable skin, and Cheo Hodari Coker is the man in charge who has the final say on everything. That's why he's called the showrunner.

"It's very sophisticated," he told Entertainment Weekly when asked about Luke Cage. "It's got a '90s hip-hop vibe, but it's really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us.

"We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we've got the Marvel action. We've got drama. I would like this to be - I mean, I know this is heavy, but - The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues."

Colter has already promised that Luke Cage will be even more gritty and adult-oriented than Daredevil and Jessica Jones, two Marvel shows that have already featured on Netflix to much acclaim.

The show will introduce badass cop Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and menacing hitman Shades (Theo Rossi), both of whom have long histories in the pages of Marvel Comics.

Luke Cage will debut on Netflix on September 30th.
